Tyne and Wear Metro List of Tyne and Wear Metro stations |
West Monkseaton Metro station is a station on the Tyne and Wear Metro in Monkseaton, North Tyneside, England, which was originally opened by the LNER in 1933. It reopened as part of the first section of the Metro in 1980.
The first section of the North Tyne Loop to close for Metro conversion was Manors - West Monkseaton, and therefore West Monkseaton was a terminus for trains from Newcastle via the Coast from 23 January 1978 until 10 September 1979. Empty BR passenger trains reversed using a crossover to the west of the station, which remained in place for many years until Metro track renewals. When the station reopened, it still had wooden platforms (they were replaced several years later), while one BR corporate station nameboard remained in place until new signs appeared a few years after reopening.
The station was designed in the Art Deco style, fashionable in some circles when the suburb was built, but echoed very little by the surrounding housing, which tends towards the more traditional "Mock Tudor" suburban style of mainly semi-detached housing that grew up between the 1920s and the 1950s.
Different zonal fare systems are used for Metro single tickets and inter-modal Transfare tickets, which means that for a number of journeys a Transfare may actually be cheaper than a standard Metro-only ticket.
